I have an F150 that doesn't have a tow package.
I had already installed a 7 pin socket on the rear & a brake controller to the dash when I found that there was no wiring harness to connect to.
I thought "time to call the professionals".
I asked Alberni Truck to run the extra wires I needed to give me a fully functional 7 pin socket.
The very confident salesman told me it would be simpler, quicker & cheaper to get rid of my 7 pin socket & use a Curt kit that included all the wires to go to the front of the vehicle. ok I said.
I took the afternoon off work & delivered the truck, 30 mins later I got a phone call saying I dont need to fit anything to the truck, I just needed to take the truck to Ford & get them to "flash the ECM" to tell it that there was now a 7 pin fitted & everything would magicly start working.
I queried this with the "Installer", he insisted he was right despite me pointing out that there was only 4 wires to the rear of the truck, not the 7 thats needed.
When I picked up the truck the very confident salesman told me how they had saved me $500, I pointed out that he had looked at the truck & recommended I fit a full wiring harness kit & that I'd wasted my afternoon.
I took the truck to Ford, they confirmed that there is no tow package fitted & therefore it would be poinless to "flash the ECM" because there are no wires for the ECM to connect to.
They advised me to run the required wires from the rear socket to the front of the truck & connect them "old school", which is exactly what I'd asked Alberni Truck to do in the first place.
To cap off my wasted afternoon, I returned to Alberni Truck to pass on the information from Ford only to find the door locked at 16.45 when the sign on the door says they close at 17.00
If you want some un-necessary toys bolted to your truck & plugged into an existing wiring harness by an "Installer", these guys are probably great, if you need a competant automotive electrician, go somewhere else !
